Jaguar unveils £130,000 Type 01 EV after rebrand backlash

Jaguar has officially unveiled its luxury Type 01 EV in New York, marking a crucial milestone two years after its controversial company remark sparked widespread criticism.

Those striking four-seat grand tourer is the most powerful road car Jaguar has ever produced, packing a three-engine setup that pushes out over 1,000 horsepower and delivers a projected range of up to 450 miles. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027 JLR’s Solihull plant, with a high starting price of £130,000.

However, the vehicle’s massive proportions, measuring around two meters wide, have raised practical concerns, with critics noting that its expansive frame is much better suited to wide American motorways than tight UK parking infrastructure.

The launch comes at a fragile time for parent company Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). The manufacturer has struggled with falling sales as low-cost Chinese competitors chip away at its market share, in addition to the fallout from a crippling cyber attack last year that halted production for weeks.

Compounding these pressures, JLR recently announced plans to cut 4,000 jobs worldwide to cut costs by £1.7bn.

By targeting wealthy foreign buyers with an aggressive design, Jaguar hopes the Type 01 will help turn the page on a turbulent period marked by past strategic mistakes and financial strain.

Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the production of Jaguar’s new electric car would “support thousands of jobs across the West Midlands and North West”, adding that it would “mark another step forward in our mission to reindustrialise Britain”.
