Following reports of iPhone Duos with cracked and broken internal screens, often showing a bright line from the center to the right, Apple said in a statement to Bloomberg in the 9 on 5Mc that it is aware of “an issue affecting the inner display” on a “small number of iPhone Duo units.” If your iPhone Duo is affected, Apple suggests contacting AppleCare for a replacement.
Here’s the full statement shared by Apple’s Alex Kirschner The Verge:
The response to iPhone Duo from early adopters has been incredibly positive, and we’re seeing exciting things from developers quickly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue affecting the internal display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience problems with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Kirshner says that most units are not susceptible and that problems appear quickly on units with the defect.
Soon after launch, iPhone Duo users started reporting similar issues where the hinge would get stuck, and opening the device would cause a crack and the distinct bright lines on the display. One user in Australia said an Apple Store replaced their unit “on the spot.”
This weekend, iFixit published its teardown of the phone and gave its perspective on why some phones might crack. Where the damage occurred, iFixit shows how the foldable screen presses against a center bar.
The Verge contacted Apple about the reports, but did not receive an on-the-record response about the problems with these new phones. They are some of the first devices to launch after new CEO John Ternus took over from Tim Cook.
