Saturday is Halloween, which means some of us are out there watching something scary. And what could be more terrifying than a new episode of It: Welcome to Derry?
Released overnight on HBO Max, the 30-minute episode “A Story of Derry” (directed by Tazbah Chavez and written by Cherie Dimaline and Jasmyne Flournoy) turns back the clock to the days of Pennywise. According to the description, it centers on a trio of children “wandering into the Westernwood… where they encounter a terrifying ancient spirit.”
If you remember the show, you probably remember the fourth episode It: Chapter 2 both explain Pennywise’s origin as a transdimensional entity that crashed on Earth millions of years ago, feeding on the fear of humans until a tribe of Indians made a dagger that locked his spirit in the forest. The special brings back the Native American cast of Welcome to Derry, including Kimberly Guerrero as young Rose, Morningstar Angeline and Kiawentiio as past warriors Sesqui and Necani, and added Zahn McClarnon to his ranks.
Because it will be a while Welcome to Derry comes back with the second season, “Story” is a good add-on to raise people and help to expand the scope of the series of the show 1962. (And since season two is supposed to be a tone shift, that might mean its cast won’t learn about Pennywise like season 1 did.) As mentioned earlier, it’s on HBO Max with an ASL variant, both as their own individual entries. Happy Halloween!
