Kitbash and Cardboard Star Wars Control Panel

The process of taking pieces of old dirt, scrap or model kits and sticking them to the surface of an object to create texture, detail and contrast is called greasing. It’s a technique ILM has used since it started in 1975, and you can use the same technique to add some detail—some Greebles or Greeblies—to your control panel!

5a. Start by collecting some circular Greebles – everything from bottle caps to old or broken parts of toys. I use some bottle caps, a yogurt bottle, and the lid on a poster tube.

5b of. Using hot glue or super glue, stick your parts together to create some Turkish circles. These will make up the two large silver details you see on the control panel. Ideally, these are about 2″ wide across the largest circle.

5c of. Next, create the three small dials using something like small plastic bottle caps, a boba straw, or any other small, cutable plastic cylinder. I used plastic pipettes and cut the end off about ½”.

5 d. Paint your Greebles with silverware and a brush. Make sure to paint over a covered surface so you don’t get paint on your work surface.
