We all know that the iPhone Duo didn’t get the launch that was expected. Apple’s first foldable phone saw reports of cracked inner displays, creaking hinges and software issues hours after it reached customers. Now Apple wants to know how customers feel about the device. Continue reading.
Apple sends iPhone Duo owners a detailed feedback survey
According to a report by MacRumors, Apple is sending email surveys to select iPhone Duo owners to understand their experience with the foldable bar. The questionnaire starts with the question why they decided to buy the phone in the first place. Users can choose from options such as whether to try Apple’s first foldable, make an impulse purchase or expect smartphone prices to rise in the near future.
The next set of questions will be more specific about the design of the phone. Apple wants to know how they feel about the 5.4-inch external screen when the phone is folded. This is kind of interesting because the screen is close to the size of the display on Apple’s discontinued iPhone Mini models.
The company then asks users how noticeable they find the padding on the inner fold-out display. Since a visible fold is one of the common concerns with foldable phones, Apple seems interested in knowing how much it affects the everyday experience.
Another question focuses on the under-display camera. Apple asks if the camera is distracting or inconvenient to use. It also wants buyers to evaluate the image quality of this camera, which has a 4-megapixel resolution. This is another area that has received criticism in early product reviews.
The survey ends with an open-ended question that allows customers to suggest features they would like Apple to add or change on the iPhone Duo. This gives users the opportunity to share feedback on the specific areas covered in the questionnaire.
Interestingly, the survey doesn’t directly ask about some of the other complaints surrounding the folding bar. These include the reported screen cracks, the absence of Face ID and problems with apps that were not optimized for the foldable display.
Apple regularly sends out surveys after launching new products, so this move doesn’t automatically mean the company is planning major changes to the iPhone Duo. However, with its first foldable already facing criticism from some early buyers, the feedback could help Apple understand which parts of the experience need more attention.
What went wrong with the iPhone Duo?
As already mentioned, the launch of the iPhone Duo was not very smooth. Within hours of the phone reaching some customers, reports of cracks appearing on the inner folding display started circulating online. Some users claim to have noticed damage to the hinge, with visible lines, dead pixels and in certain cases a responsive display.
The issue has been referred to online as ‘crackgate’. One theory is that a component under the inner display, near the hinge, could move out of place and put pressure on the screen when the phone is folded or unfolded. However, the exact cause of the reported damage has not been confirmed.
The display isn’t the only part of the iPhone Duo that has attracted complaints. Some users have also reported grinding noises when flipping the phone, while others have faced software issues when switching between the outer and inner displays. There have also been complaints about apps behaving inconsistently, unresponsive interface elements and problems with the sidebar of the external display.
On the other hand, a report citing an anonymous Foxconn employee claimed that Apple has dropped its quality control checks to produce enough iPhone Duo units before launch. The claim has not been independently verified, and there is no confirmed link between the alleged changes and the display problems reported by users.
It’s worth noting that these complaints don’t necessarily affect all iPhone Duos. Some software problems could potentially be fixed by updates, while physical damage to the display or hinge may require repair or replacement.
