Major Canadian documentary about BioWare to premiere next year

An upcoming Canadian documentary will chronicle the history of BioWare, the legendary Edmonton-based game developer that shut down on October 21st.

As reported by Deadline, Massive Effect: The BioWare Story will chronicle the history of the iconic Canadian studio founded in 1995 by University of Alberta doctors Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip. According to DeadlineThis doc started shooting two years ago, so it covers “the final chapter” of BioWare, although it’s unclear how deep into the weeds of it all it will actually get. For context, a relatively small team of about 50 people were still working at BioWare on a fifth mass effect Game that has since been cancelled.

Commissioned by Edmonton-based Super Channel, Massive Effect: The BioWare Story is written and directed by Edmonton native Akash Sherman (Singhs in the ring) and co-produced by Edmonton-based Fennessey Films and Score G Productions.

Per Deadlinethe film will feature the founders Muzyka, Zeschuk and Yip, Casey Hudson (creative director at Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the mass effect trilogy), The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley, Canadian game host Victor Lucas (The Electric Playground), former EA CEO John Riccitiello, Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly, Canadian-American actress Jennifer Hale (star of KOTOR and the mass effect trilogy) and BioWare developers such as Drew Karpyshyn (KOTOR in the mass effect Writer), Mark Darrah (veteran Dragon Age Producer) and James Ohlen (Lead Designer op Baldur’s Gate in the KOTOR), among others.

A release date has not been confirmed, however Deadline reports that the film will have a “major film festival run” and a world premiere sometime next year. Of course, many people will anticipate this, due to the global grief of fans and developers.

The parent company EA, which is now co-owned by the Saudi regime, closed BioWare to set a new priority. Star Wars: Battlefront Game after taking on billions in debt due to the acquisition of a leveraged buyout.
