Apple opens up Siri AI to all developers, allowing more advanced third-party app controls

Apple’s latest wave of beta software recently went live for developers, bringing several new features across Safari, iOS and watchOS. Along with these changes, the company also announced something much more significant for third-party developers: it finally lets them use Siri AI more deeply, opening capabilities that were previously limited to a narrow set of supported actions. The company released a new developer preview that allows apps to handle more complex requests, including making restaurant reservations, checking deliveries and placing orders. All by simply asking Siri.

Great news for our developers! We’re shipping a developer preview that dramatically expands the capabilities of all apps to integrate with Siri. So excited to see what you guys do with this.https://t.co/kbKcVB3FiB

Devs can now teach Siri to handle complex tasks

According to Apple, developers can now use the App Intents framework to leverage Siri AI’s understanding of personal context, on-screen information, and natural language. The previous system had limitations around predefined app categories. Now developers can build their own custom actions.

Then you have something called skills. Essentially, developers let Siri learn how to perform multiple actions as part of a request, rather than requiring users to issue separate commands for each step. Let’s say you found a pair of sneakers in a shopping app and want to share them with a friend. Siri could locate the product, find out who you are talking to, and send it through messages. Apple is also expanding Siri’s access to Spotlight’s semantic index, allowing it to find app content that previously didn’t fit into supported categories.

Siri’s expanded capabilities are still a work in progress

The latest iOS 27.3 beta already offers a glimpse of these capabilities. Siri AI can now organize Safari tabs, find previously visited places and archive old files across 15 Apple apps.

Google is also making similar progress with Gemini. Its Connected Apps Platform and Android AppFunctions give developers ways to integrate their services and personalized actions with the Google AI Assistant.

In terms of availability, Apple’s advanced third-party integrations are currently limited to developer testing. The company expects to reach the first experiences for customers in a few months, while App Store submissions are planned for spring 2027.
