This flat cooler slides under your car camping bed platform

Anyone who has built or bought a bed platform for an SUV or wagon knows the ritual. Every night the cooler comes out before bed. Every morning it goes in again. It’s nerve-wracking enough that someone has finally built a cooler that skips that step entirely. The Hele Outdoors Ice Box measures 34 × 14 × 9.5 inches and weighs 25 pounds empty. The flat, elongated profile is the central idea, although the rest of the design also deserves its place.

Two covers, a reasonable idea

Separate compartments allow you to grab a drink without exposing everything else to the hot air.*

The icebox separates into two separate lidded sections. The smaller front compartment handles drinks and snacks you’re constantly reaching for. The larger rear section, which measures approximately 17.5 × 9 × 6.5 inches internally, holds meat, dairy, and produce you open less often. Cold air falls every time you lift a lid. Two independent covers mean you don’t have to empty the entire cooler every time you want a soda at 200 miles.

Built as it is called

Rotomolded construction, dual drain plugs, and a tailgate trick make this more than a flat box of ice.*

Rotomolded walls, secure latches, rope handles with grab bars, dual drain plugs, raised feet, and a built-in bottle opener covers the basics. The smaller lid includes molded cup holders. Slide the cooler part way out of your vehicle, and the heavier loaded end stays inside to help stabilize the expanded section, turning the whole thing into a makeshift surface. Hele calls this “tailgate mode,” and it’s a clever use of a form that must already exist for other reasons.

About those claims

Hele says 48 hours of ice retention; no independent test results yet exist to confirm it.*

Hele claims the Ice Box will keep ice for around 48 hours and recommends chilling it for 24 hours before your trip to maximize retention. Both numbers are manufacturer claims with no independent verification behind them. The pre-chill requirement is worth taking seriously, not treating it as fine print.

Know what you are buying

With approximately 25.8 liters of estimated capacity, this cooler fits a few for a weekend, not a group for a week.*

New Atlas calculates usable volume at about 25.8 liters from published internal dimensions, noting that the compartments look tapered, so treat that figure as an estimate rather than an official rating. Hele says the cooler supports a couple for two to three nights or a solo camper for two to four. That’s honest framing. At 25 pounds empty and 34 inches long, carrying it across a parking lot solo is a two-handed commitment.

The Kickstarter campaign launched on September 15, 2026, and hit its funding goal within 24 hours of Hele’s official blog. Commitment prices appeared at $179 for VIP tier and $189 in early campaign coverage; Check the live campaign for current availability. Delivery timing, shipping regions, and final specifications all require confirmation before committing. The Ice Box addresses a specific problem well on paper. Whether the shape fits your platform is more important than any other specification on the list.
