Friday the 13thits prequel series Crystal Lake has arrived on Peacock, with all eight episodes available to watch. However, international viewers will have to wait a little longer; look at us Crystal Lake Release date schedule for more on that.
Over eight episodes, Crystal Lake discover the origins of Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother and the original killer in the popular slasher franchise. I’ve been excited about this for months because we haven’t really done a deep dive into who Pamela is in the original movie series.
Linda Cardellini stars in the lead role, bringing many layers to Pamela. The catalyst for her behavior comes when her young son, Jason (Callum Vinson), drowns at Camp Crystal Lake, where she works as a cook. Grief-stricken, Pamela struggles to cope, leading to an increase in paranoia and an eventual spiral into the serial killer we know her to be.

Pamela is shown through a very empathetic lens, as a single mother who has lost her only child. She tore everything away from her and even tried her best to hold it together. But her descent into madness is inevitable, and even in the first episode the killings are brutal and shocking.
There is a mystery surrounding Pamela’s past that is worth lingering over. In the Crystal LakePamela feels really well rounded, and as a big fan of the original movies, I love how much care the creators put into her.
Crystal Lake was written by Brad Caleb Kane, who recently worked on HBO Max’s excellent IT Series Welcome to Derry. I’ve really been enjoying his adaptations of classic horror media lately, and I hope it continues.
There is also a welcome expansion on another character. Jason’s father, Elias, gets a new storyline that ties in well with Pamela’s mysterious backstory. Elias is played by Hamish Linklater, who delivers a great performance as a man whose decisions greatly influence how Jason gets out and, crucially, how he actually survives his drowning, as we saw in the original. Friday the 13th film.
Crystal Lake adds a lot of new lore to the franchise, but it feels stretched out in places. These pacing issues didn’t affect my enjoyment of the series too much, but even a six episode run would have felt tighter in my opinion.
I hope a lot Friday the 13th Fans share my opinion Crystal Lakeespecially when it comes to the characters, and how they got really interesting backstories and expansions beyond the original movies. This is the kind of prequel that feels like it was made by someone who really cared about the source material.
There are many nods to the movies, such as seeing the killer’s point of view, the chilling score, and a title sequence that makes everyone feel nostalgic for the era of 80’s slasher movies. It’s a well-made series with great editing, something that fits right into the abundance Friday the 13th Stories.
In my opinion, this is the perfect series to watch over Halloween, or rather if you’re impatient. It’s gripping and binge-worthy, giving horror fans both familiarity and some new material to entertain them.
