Do you want an AI job? Deployment engineers earn executive level salary – up to $1.45M a year

Key takeaways:

  • Experienced AI engineers can earn more than $2.25 million in salary, according to a new study.
  • Only about 2,000 experienced senior AI deployment leaders exist in the US market.
  • Enterprises need “elite” forward deployment engineers to better measure AI ROI growth.

AI engineers make well over six figures in salary — and much more in bonuses and equity, according to data from a new report by executive search firm Christian & Timbers.

Companies now pay “elite” AI deployment engineers between $586,000 and $1.45 million annually in total compensation, with senior leaders in the field earning up to $2.25 million, according to the report. This figure approaches the median compensation of executive officers of public companies, the authors note.

Christian & Timbers is an AI executive search and leadership consulting firm, recruiting CEOs, board members, technology executives, and AI engineers for enterprises. The new report draws on more than 550 interviews with engineers, deployment leaders, and executives from January to June 2026, along with closed and current open offers. The compensation bands are Christian & Timbers estimates and represent ranges rather than statistical averages.

“Enterprise CEOs are under pressure to deliver returns on their AI investments. The most important decision is how to build the team that delivers on that goal,” said Jeff Christian, founder and CEO of Christian & Timbers, in a press release.

Not enough senior AI engineers to meet demand

The report noted that the surprising salary includes base salary, bonus, and annualized equity. Christian & Timbers said it defines an “Elite” Forward Deployment Engineer (FDE) as “a senior AI-native deployment builder, typically with 7 to 15 years of experience, including at least two years building and deploying agent-based automated workflows that deliver measurable ROI with a documented enterprise impact of $10M or more, who has also led a forward deployment team of others.”

The large salary ranges reflect increasing company investments in AI talent and employee development. Microsoft, AWS, and OpenAI have announced more than $7.5 billion in corporate and partner investment in AI deployment over the past six months, Christian & Timbers noted in the release.

Also: Almost 70% of workers now regularly use AI – but many do not get time to qualify

There is an increasing need to fill roles such as Senior Principal AI Engineer, AI Solutions Engineer, and Head of Deployment – but there is a limited pool of qualified candidates. The company estimates that only 2,000 of the oldest deployment leaders exist in the US market, according to a previous Christian & Timbers study, which does not meet the demand – so companies compete for the same small group of professionals, hence the increase in salaries.

While the report highlights lucrative pay for various engineering roles, the company said public job titles make comparisons more challenging.

“Christian & Timber’s elite category spans different titles, while announced FDE roles cover a wide range of experience and responsibilities. Experienced deployment engineers can be directly recruited or promoted to work under titles such as personal software engineer or main AI engineer,” said the study.

Plus, equity and bonuses make up 52% to 66% of senior engineer pay, and most jobs don’t include that value in salary, the report noted.
