Huawei is all set to unveil its next Mate series of flagship smartphones in a few days. The company could launch as many as three new devices. These may include the Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro and Mate 90 Pro Max. The first two models will be standard offerings with minor changes. However, recent leaks indicate that the Huawei Mate 90 Pro will be the star of the show, with full-size external camera support.
Huawei’s Mate 90 Pro Max could arrive with an external DSLR-style camera add-on
According to the Chinese gadget leaker Ice Universe, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max model will support an external camera. The tipster emphasized that this will be a true external camera, not a traditional external lens or telephoto attachment. This will be an independent one-inch sensor and can be attached to the back of the phone.
In addition, the source claims that the camera offers a continuous zoom range of 24mm to 240mm. It works at native 1x through 10x zoom. The brand has paired it with a variable aperture from f/2.0 to f/4.5. The add-on will be able to handle multiple focal lengths on its own, rather than simply augmenting the handset’s telephoto shooter.
Huawei takes a different approach than normal telephoto add-ons
It is worth mentioning that Huawei’s approach to an external camera is that the accessory has its own sensor. Regular telephoto extender lenses do not have this approach. These usually sit over a device’s existing camera to boost a native zoom level. However, with Huawei’s external camera you could capture from 1x to higher zoom levels without the need for the phone’s own camera.
