Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 cash back to MacBook Pro owners who switch to a Surface Laptop Ultra. It’s a bonus on top of a trade-in quote, not a payout, and it requires the purchase of a $2,599.99 laptop. Here’s what Microsoft’s trade-in tool actually quotes, alongside our cash offers for the same machines.
Microsoft wants your MacBook Pro bad enough to pay a $1,000 bonus for it. Before you open your box, it’s worth understanding what this number is attached to – because for most MacBook Pros, it’s not the number you see.
What Microsoft actually offers
The pitch, reported on October 10, 2026, asks MacBook Pro owners to “break up with your MacBook”. The mechanics behind it:
- The $1,000 is a bonus, not a prize. It sits on top of all Microsoft trade-in tool quotes for your laptop. It is not the exchange value itself.
- It is tied to a purchase. The bonus applies if your device and your purchase qualify, and the purchase in question is a Surface Laptop Ultra – pre-orders starting at $2,599.99, shipping by October 16, 2026.
- It will be paid after the inspection. Microsoft pays the total once it receives and evaluates the laptop. If the device arrives in worse shape than described, the offer may be reduced; You can then accept the revised figure or send the MacBook back.
- “Up to” does a lot of work. Reported quotes from Microsoft’s own value finder range from $45 to $2,115 depending on the model.
The last point is the value of sitting with it. The same program that exceeds $1,000 reportedly quoted $45 for a 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro, and one journalist was offered $32.37 for a basic 12-inch MacBook.
How the numbers compare
Here are Microsoft’s reported quotes alongside our cash offers for the same configurations. We assume a fully functional laptop in flawless cosmetic condition with charger included, quoted on October 19, 2026.
| MacBook Pro | Microsoft Trade-in Quotation | Our cash offer |
|---|---|---|
| 13 inch (2020), 8GB / 256GB | $45 | $144 (Intel i5) – $175 (M1) |
| 14-inch (2023), M3, 8GB / 512GB | $275 | $542 |
| 14-inch (2024), M4, 16GB / 1TB | $755 | $758 |
| 16-inch, M5 Max, 128GB / 4TB | $2,115 | $2,250 |
We’re paying more than Microsoft’s trade-in tool on three of the four configurations it’s reportedly quoted, and we’re doing it without asking you to buy anything.
On older machines it is not close. A 2020 13-inch Pro is worth three to four times more to us than Microsoft’s trade-in tool. A 2023 M3 is worth about double. These are the machines that most people actually sell.
On the current 14-inch M4 we are level. $758 versus $755 – almost identical, except that ours arrived as cash and theirs is dependent on a $2,599.99 purchase.
On a top-spec 16-inch, Microsoft’s quote is still higher. Their reported $2,115 beats our $1,950 for the same 128GB/4TB machine in flawless condition. In brand new condition, that comes to $2,048, which closes most of the gap but not all. If that’s your laptop and you want the Surface, their deal is really hard to beat, and we’d rather tell you to do that than anything else.
The best we pay for any MacBook today is $2,090for a 16-inch M5 Max with 128GB memory and 8TB storage in brand new condition. We publish the ceiling, because every quote on our site is a real figure for a real configuration, not a headline.
The $1,000 question
The honest way to read Microsoft’s promotion is as a discount on a $2,599.99 laptop, not as a cash-out for your MacBook. These are different products:
- If you want a Surface Laptop UltraThe bonus is real money and you should take it seriously. Spending $2,599.99 to collect $1,000 only makes sense if you wanted the $2,599.99 laptop first.
- If you want cash, or you stick with a Macthe bonus is worth absolutely nothing to you, and what remains is an exchange rate that starts at $45.
One detail the report doesn’t specify: whether Microsoft’s basic training value will come as cash or store credit. Worth confirming before committing, as it changes what the deal is.
What we do differently
- Cash, with nothing to buy. PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or a check in the mail. You are not required to buy anything, from us or anyone else.
- A quote you can see before you send. Our calculator will price your exact configuration – chip, memory, storage, cosmetic condition – on the page before you commit to anything.
- Free shipping, and a return if you don’t agree. We send a prepaid UPS label. If our inspection comes back different from your description, we will tell you what has changed and you decide. If you refuse, your MacBook will be returned free of charge.
- We buy machines Microsoft tool hardly values. Older Intel Pros, cracked screens, dead batteries, units that won’t power up. A $45 quote on a working 2020 Pro suggests where the program’s interest ends.
Frequently asked questions
Is Microsoft really paying $1,000 for a MacBook Pro?
Not for the MacBook itself. The $1,000 is a promotional bonus added on top of Microsoft’s trade-in quote, and it requires the purchase of a Surface Laptop Ultra, which starts at $2,599.99. The training rates themselves were reported to be between $45 and $2,115 depending on the model.
Want to beat Microsoft’s trade-in offer on my MacBook Pro?
On older and mid-range machines, usually by a large margin – two to four times their quote on the examples above. On a current 14-inch M4 we come out level. On a top-spec 16-inch M5 Max, their reported quote is still ahead of us. Run your exact configuration through our calculator and compare; it takes about a minute and costs nothing.
What’s the most you’ll pay for a MacBook Pro?

No. We buy the laptop for cash and you spend nothing. There is no purchase, no credit and no store to spend it.

It can, if the device does not match the description – the same condition that Microsoft imposes on its own program. We tell you what we found and what it changes. You can accept the revised offer or have the MacBook shipped to you for free.
