When it comes to cleaning hacks, baking soda is my ultimate game changer for tackling household chores. From wiping away stubborn dirt and stains and unclogging drains to even handling pest control, there are surprising things you didn’t know you could clean with baking soda.
In fact, baking powder is also a natural deodorizer that effectively removes unpleasant odors. This is thanks to its mild alkaline properties, which can neutralize the pH of acidic compounds – such as spoiled food smells and odors.
And since I put a small bowl in the back of my fridge a few months ago, it has done wonders for absorbing long-term food odors.

However, I recently came across an alternative trick that experts say is even more effective at eliminating refrigerator odors than baking soda. Therefore, you should use activated charcoal instead.
Activated carbon can absorb odors
Although the name sounds quite alarming, what exactly is activated charcoal? Essentially, activated carbon – or carbon – is a fine-grained, highly porous material made up of over 90% carbon, which makes it exceptionally effective at absorbing odours.
Similar to baking soda, this item is non-toxic and odorless, making it great for home use. Not only is it known to neutralize bad odors, but it can also help purify the air, making it ideal to use alongside the best air purifiers.
So how do you use activated carbon in your refrigerator? Fortunately, this is without fear, and they usually come in small blocks placed in a bag, or as part of an odor-eliminating gel canister that has charcoal as its active ingredient.
These sachets are available for purchase online, or you can make them yourself by decanting loose activated charcoal into a small cloth bag. Then simply put it in your fridge where it quickly absorbs lingering odors. The good thing is that these odor busters can be easily used around the house.
In fact, they also work wonders for freshening up smelly shoe cabinets or removing strong odors in damp basements.
Of course, if your refrigerator continues to smell, there may be an underlying problem. Be sure to check this simple step to avoid a clogged fridge, and always keep regular deep cleaning.
So if you don’t have baking soda or need a more powerful solution, activated charcoal may be the secret to keeping your fridge odor-free forever.
