Add MobiGyan as a preferred source on GoogleNikon India has launched the Nikon NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S, a professional telephoto zoom lens designed for full-frame FX-format mirrorless cameras. Part of the Nikon S-Line, it is described as the world’s first interchangeable zoom lens to combine a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter.

The lens covers a 120-300mm focal length range, extended to 168-420mm with the built-in teleconverter. It weighs about 2,735 grams, making it about 515 grams lighter than the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR released in 2020.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S: World’s first interchangeable zoom lens

The NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S is primarily designed for professional wildlife photography to capture fast-moving subjects in a variety of environments. Its focal length range is suitable for photographing birds in flight, fast moving animals, elusive wildlife in dense forests, and subjects that are active during low light periods at dawn and dusk. It is also designed for long-range photography where capturing fine details from a distance is important.

The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and optical design should deliver high resolution and smooth, natural bokeh. Nikon also highlights rendering performance comparable to that of a prime lens across the frame, while maintaining the flexibility of a zoom lens.

The built-in 1.4x teleconverter extends the maximum focal length to 420 mm without having to change lenses. When the teleconverter is engaged, the maximum aperture changes from f/2.8 to f/4. Despite incorporating this mechanism, the lens weighs approximately 2,735 grams, offering a lighter design than its predecessor.

Autofocus | Optical Coatings | Vibration reduction

The lens uses Nikon’s Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) autofocus drive system, designed to deliver fast, accurate and smooth focus when tracking moving subjects. It is intended for situations involving unpredictable movement, including wildlife photography, birds in flight, sports, vehicles and performances.

For improved image quality in challenging lighting conditions, the lens combines Nikon’s Meso Amorphous Coat with ARNEO Coat. These coatings are designed to reduce ghosting and flare when shooting against strong light, photographing subjects emerging from shadowy foliage, or working in low light environments. Nikon describes Meso Amorphouzs Coat as the highest anti-reflection performance in its history. The front element also has a fluorine coating.

For handheld photography, the lens offers up to 6.5 stops of vibration reduction in the center and edges of the frame when paired with a camera that supports Synchro VR. This can help reduce camera damage when shooting at longer focal lengths and provide more flexibility when using a tripod or monopod is impractical.

Design & Handling

The NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S has internal focus and an internal zoom mechanism, keeping the overall length of the lens constant during focusing and zooming. Its magnesium alloy construction and extensive sealing are designed to provide dust- and drop-resistant performance for outdoor shooting environments.

For tripod use, the lens supports Arca Swiss screw-type quick-release tripod clamps. The tripod collar has a rubber cushion and an integrated finger grip for handling and portability. The lens also has front screw-on filters and rear slip-in filter holders.

Nikon includes the HB-120 bayonet hood, designed for convenient attachment, removal and storage. These handling features should make the lens more practical for demanding shooting situations, especially when working outdoors or tracking subjects over extended periods.
