The UK AI Minister warned that it is “likely, if not inevitable” that the country’s cyber defenses will be breached at some point. Speaking at a press conference, Kanishka Narayan pointed to an incident of a rogue OpenAI agent hacking an Australian government website in June. He said that while no medical records are known to have been accessed in the attack, the incident should still “worry us”. Narayan said the government plans to put advanced AI to work to combat the threat as he outlined how the government plans to prepare for any serious future incidents. BBC
The UK must not become dependent on foreign AI systems that can be turned off in the short term and must develop its own versions of the technology, according to the head of the Alan Turing Institute. The country needs a stronger domestic position in AI in response to the US and China’s ongoing leadership in the field, with “national resilience” a key focus for ATI said George Williamson. The institute is Britain’s leading AI research body and is under new leadership after the government, its main source of funding, demanded a strategic shift. The Guardian
Google officially released its first screenless Fitbit tracker earlier in May this year, giving users a distraction-free health and fitness tracking experience that doesn’t involve them constantly looking at their wrists. After about five months, the tech giant is ready to strike a balance between the simplicity of the Fitbit Air and the more feature-packed Pixel Watch 5. Fitbit Edge Early leaks about the device gave us a good idea of what to expect, and now that Google has taken the wraps of the wearable, nothing is left to the imagination. Android Authority

When you think of Amazon hardware, premium design and powerful performance are probably not the first things that come to mind. Its Kindles and Fire tablets typically prioritized affordability above all else—and while that formula worked, it didn’t produce the most exciting technology. That looks set to change with Amazon’s latest hardware. Its new Kindles and rebranded Alexa tablets are slimmer, smarter and significantly more capable than their predecessors—and while they come with higher price tags to match, I’m surprisingly okay with that.
