WhatsApp group chats get permanent message pins, private status updates, and more

WhatsApp introduces four new features for group conversations to make it easier for users to manage important messages and catch up on conversations they missed. The latest additions include Group Status, permanent message pinning, a dedicated filter for mentions and replies, and the ability to share recent message history even after joining a group.

The updates address a common problem with busy WhatsApp groups, where conversations can accumulate hundreds of messages within a few hours, making it difficult to find important information or follow messages that actually need your attention.

Group status and permanent message pins

The new Group Status feature allows users to share updates exclusively with members of a particular group. Unlike the regular status feature, where updates are shared with a select audience from your contacts, the group status keeps them in the conversation. Members can view, react and share their own updates, while the content automatically disappears after 24 hours.

WhatsApp also removes the expiration restriction on priced messages. Previously, users had to choose how long a message would remain locked at the top of a conversation. The latest update adds an option to hold messages indefinitely, which should come in handy for groups where important information needs to remain accessible for longer periods of time.

Find and capture important messages

Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced a feature that allows the recent message history to be shared when adding someone to a group. The company now extends this functionality by allowing users to share these messages even after the new member has joined. Simply tap on their name in the conversation to send the previous messages, which remain end-to-end encrypted.

Another addition is a dedicated filter for mentions and replies. It brings together unread group conversations where someone mentioned you, replied directly to your message or used @all. That means users don’t have to go through every unread group conversation to find messages specifically aimed at them.

WhatsApp has also worked to improve message discovery through a recently introduced search shortcut on iPhones. Scheduled messages are another feature that is currently being tested, although it is still the stable version of the app.
