Xpeng just launched a $20,800 electric SUV, and US motorists should take notice

Xpeng has launched the Mona L05 in China with a starting price of 139,800 yuan (about $20,800), bringing a new electric crossover with up to 635 km of challenging range, an extended range option and a technology-heavy cabin to its mass-market lineup. While the vehicle is not confirmed for the US market, its combination of pricing, range and features offers a glimpse of the competition American automakers will face as Chinese EV makers expand overseas.

The five-seat mid-size SUV is available with fully electric and extended electric powertrains. The launch also comes as Xpeng looks beyond China, with the company targeting 65 countries and regions for the model.

Xpeng Mona L05 packs range and technology into an affordable SUV

The Mona L05 measures 4,870 mm long and has a wheelbase of 2,940 mm. Its exterior features Y-shaped headlights, a closed front fascia, semi-hidden door handles, and a floating roofline. Inside, the crossover gets a 17.3-inch central touchscreen, a 26.8-inch head-up display and a separate 17.3-inch ceiling fan. A 20-speaker audio system, a massage-equipped front passenger seat and 41 storage spaces add to its equipment list.

The fully electric versions use a rear-mounted 183 kW (245 hp) motor and come with 58.2 kWh or 71.1 kWh LFP battery options. Xpeng quotes a maximum CLTC range of 635 km, equivalent to about 395 miles. The extended range version pairs the same electric motor with a 37.2 kWh battery and a 1.5-liter gasoline engine. It offers 310 km of CLTC-rated electric range and up to 1,310 km of demanding combined range.

The higher specification Ultra SE variant gets two Turing chips with a combined computing capacity of 1,500 TOPS for assisted driving functions. Drivers must still monitor the system and remain ready to take control.

Could the Mona L05 make it to the US?

In China, the six variants of the Mona L05 are priced between 144,800 Yuan and 176,800 Yuan, with introductory discounts bringing the range down to 139,800-171,800 Yuan (roughly $20,800-$25,600). Deliveries to China are scheduled to begin on November 1st.

For US buyers, the interesting part is not just the converted price. It’s the level of range, cabin technology, and equipment that Xpeng offers at this price point. However, the Chinese starting price should not be treated as a potential US sticker price. Import duties, regulatory requirements, distribution, and other costs will change the equation significantly.

Xpeng has not announced a US launch or US pricing. Its global expansion plans make the Mona L05 worth checking out, but American buyers shouldn’t expect to find it at dealers.
