If you’re thinking of pre-ordering Apple’s first foldable iPhone, you can now see what a broken one costs to fix. Apple has posted iPhone Duo repair prices for people without AppleCare+, its paid protection plan, and the most expensive category runs $1,499.
9to5Mac saw the numbers on Apple’s US repair pricing page this week. That top price equates to about three-quarters of the phone’s $1,999 starting cost. Pre-orders open on Friday, so buyers can decide now if the extra coverage is worth it.
What all iPhone Duo repairs cost without AppleCare+
Here is the full list of Apple’s estimated prices:
- Cover damage: $49
- Back glass damage: $199
- Battery service: $229
- Rear camera damage: $229
- Outer display damage: $379
- Outer display and back glass damage: $509
- Inside display damage: $999
- Other damage: $1,499
Apple calls these estimates. Authorized repair shops may set their own fees, so a shop outside of Apple stores might quote you something different.
The $49 cover layer is the bargain. It’s the matte coating over the inner screen, and Apple said you can replace it on your own. A cut coating doesn’t have to mean a whole new display.
The internal display is the big one. At $999, it costs more than twice as much as the $379 external screen. Apple hasn’t listed a separate price for the hinge, so it’s unclear where this type of damage will land.
How much AppleCare + cuts the bill
AppleCare+ adds $19.99 per month to the iPhone Duo, which comes to about $240 over a full year. With it, the internal display damage drops from $999 to $99, and the external display damage drops from $379 to $29. Battery service is free, and theft or loss costs $149.
The cover layer swap also drops to $19 with cover. The iPhone Duo is Apple’s most expensive iPhone ever, and the 2TB model costs $3,199. The phone will begin shipping on October 23, with pre-orders opening on Friday, October 16.
Simply put, a cracked inner screen costs about ten times more without a cover.
