SafeOwl OWLY 1: Cameras, GPS and required US plans

SafeOwl OWLY 1 is a children’s smartwatch built around calls, location information, and parent-managed contacts. It puts its own cellular connection on a child’s wrist while leaving open web browsing, social media and downloadable games out of the design. The important buying question is whether that communication setup fits your family’s routine and its required US service plan.

Its most visible hardware difference from a basic dial watch is the pair of cameras. The more consistent property detail is the activation: OWLY 1 uses SafeOwl’s pre-installed SIM and subscription, instead of working as an unrestricted smartwatch on any mobile plan.

An independent connection with approved contacts

The watch supports 4G LTE, Wi-Fi and Bluetoothand the child does not need a separate phone for ordinary clock communication. Parents manage the device through the SafeOwl app for iOS and Android. The pre-installed Nano SIM must be activated as part of the setup; the manufacturer currently limits activation to US customers.

Calls and messages are organized around a parent-approved contact list. SafeOwl says that unknown or unapproved numbers are blocked. Its messaging tools include text, voice, photos, and preset messages in a controlled environment. That makes the contact list and setting of the parent more central for daily use than the installation of additional entertainment apps.

The launch announcement also lists the school mode with planned restrictions. Classroom politics remains a separate consideration. Our Cosmo School-Fi coverage explores why school-specific controls deserve attention alongside clock hardware.

Two cameras and multiple location sources

OWLY 1 combines a 5MP front camera with and 8MP rear camera. During a video call, the one-tap switch changes between the child’s view of the screen and the surroundings behind the watch. This is a practical communication feature, although the megapixel figures alone do not establish video quality in poor light or on a weak connection.

Location tools combine GPS, Wi-Fi and cellular triangulation. Parents can review location history and use designated safe zones. These functions provide information to the parent app; they should not be read as a promise of identically positioned precision in every building or network condition.

The SOS function uses a three-second hold and shares a location alert with a seven-second audio recording. Families must configure the designated contacts and familiarize themselves with this control before relying on it as part of a normal check-in routine.

Battery claims and water limits need context

The 1.4-inch TFT touchscreen uses Panda Glass, and the watch has a silicone band and a casing described by SafeOwl as shock-resistant. These are manufacturer descriptions, rather than results from an independent drop test. Ocean Blue and Berry Pink are the listed color choices.

A 900 mAh battery has a up to two days usage requirement. Call, video, and location activity will affect the actual charging interval, so a family can plan around their own usage rather than treating the maximum as a guaranteed schedule. Charging using the supplied magnetic cable.

The stated 2 ATM rating comes with a clear manufacturer limit: splashes, rain and hand washing are the intended situations. SafeOwl specifically excludes swimming, bathing and sheltering. This distinction is more important to a child’s daily activities than simply seeing a water resistance number on a spec list.

The package includes the watch with its SIM, magnetic charging cable, setup information and a SafeOwl keychain. A parent compatible phone and the SafeOwl app are part of the wider setup. The clock 1GB RAM and 8GB storage describe its internal hardware; they don’t make it into an open app platform.

On November 1, 2026, SafeOwl has the OWLY 1 for $149.99 for US preorder, with estimated shipping on November 16. The required service was $14.99 per month with no term commitment, $12.99 per month with a one-year commitment, or $9.99 per month with a two-year commitment. These service charges are separate from the watch. Please confirm the current plan terms and estimated shipment via SafeOwl’s official product page, as an estimated shipment date is not a guaranteed delivery date.
