The Xperia 10 VI was launched in May 2024, booting Android 14, and at the time Sony promised that the device would be eligible for three Android updates. That meant that it would get Android 17 at some point, but that promise is not kept as Sony has now issued a notice to its users.
As per Sony, the Xperia 10 VI will not receive Android 17 due to “limitations related to the storage configuration of the device”. Sony conducted “a detailed technical assessment” which determined that the Xperia 10 VI would not provide an “adequate” Android 17 upgrade experience. This means that Sony actually tested the Xperia 10 VI with the latest Android build but ultimately decided not to ship this update to its users.

A brief summary of the events
We’ve actually never heard such an excuse from another brand and it just looks bad to go back on a promise made to your users. Sony issued an official apology and confirmed that it is still honoring its promise to provide four years of security patches for the 10 VI. We also received confirmation that no other Xperia models will be affected.
