The Best Editor-Vetted Early Prime Day Deals

Before you swipe some serious savings, here’s how to make sure you’re getting the right tablet deal.
Our resident expert Florence Ion has been covering all kinds of tech for more than 15 years. We asked her about today’s best tablet deals and what you need to know before you buy.
Choose your screen size. A 7- to 8-inch tablet offers a different experience than a 10-inch or larger screen, like the on-sale TCL Nxtpaper 11 Gen 2. Small screens are great for portability, while larger screens are better for working out ideas and as a secondary display, but they can also be heavier.
Consider your phone. You have to choose platforms and ecosystems, just like you do with your phone. It’s generally a choice between different flavors of Android and Apple’s iPadOS, although Amazon’s Android-based Fire OS is a third platform, with tablets like the Fire HD 10 or the on-sale Fire HD 8 as an affordable option.
Do you want a tablet with a desktop-like environment? Android has made the most strides with split-screen view and pop-up windows, although it has a large library of apps that are not always tablet-optimized. Apple’s iPadOS is stricter, but the high-end iPad Pro with Apple silicon is optimized to work as a secondary device with your Mac.
Do you like to draw? The iPad’s Apple Pencil is effectively the premium add-on for creatives, while prominent Android-based tablet makers like Samsung have the proprietary S Pen (see that Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 above) for stylus input on their Tab S series. If it is not an active stylus with palm rejection and low latency, make sure it is included in the total cost of the tablet.
Stick to a Wi-Fi-only tablet. Wi-Fi models are better for your wallet and lifespan, and they remove a carrier’s ability to sell you a contract. Unless you’re regularly out in the middle of nowhere, we’re in an age where you can rely on tethering to your smartphone’s mobile hotspot.
