A 156 MHz processor, USB-C charging, and a larger screen bring meaningful upgrades to a familiar favorite
Smartphones may dominate student life, but they are terrible study partners. That is exactly the problem Texas Instruments set to solve with its latest release, the TI-84 Evo – launching April 28, 2026. Think of it as a “focus-first” version of a graphing calculator: no Wi-Fi, no notifications, no endless scrolling – just math.
Speed is finally getting a real upgrade
The biggest jump here isn’t cosmetic—it’s performance. The TI-84 Evo runs on a 156 MHz processora massive jump from the 48 MHz chip in the older TI-84 Plus CE. That translates into noticeably faster graphics, smoother function tracing, and less waiting when working through complex equations.
Couple that with one 319 × 209 display– about 50% more graphics space – and the experience feels much less cramped. Add automatic “Points of Interest” tracing, and suddenly you spend less time hunting for key values and more time solving problems.
Modern features without losing the formula
For once, a calculator upgrade actually fixes everyday annoyances. USB-C charging stations replace outdated cables, eliminating one more thing to forget before an exam. The interface has also been refreshed with icon-based navigation, making it easier to jump between functions without digging through menus.
Visually, it is also more expressive. Along with 15 graphic colors and various body options – white, mint, pink, purple, teal, raspberry and silver – it adds a bit of personality to what has traditionally been a very gray category.

Despite the updates, the layout remains familiar. If you have used a TI-84 before, there is virtually no learning curve.
Built for exams, not distractions
The TI-84 Evo is fully approved for major standardized tests, including the SAT, ACT, AP, and IB exams. That’s a big deal—it means students can rely on one device from homework to finals without worrying about compatibility.
Op $160it’s not cheap, but this isn’t a gadget you replace every year. It’s more than a long-term academic tool—one that teachers already trust and students are expected to use.
Why is this really important?
In a world where every device is fighting for your attention, the TI-84 Evo takes the opposite approach. It strips away everything unnecessary and doubles down on doing one thing well.
For students, this means fewer distractions.
For teachers, fewer confiscated phones.
And for anyone who hides a time trial, it means a calculator that finally keeps going.
