Touchscreen MacBook Pro starts at $2,899 for 14-inch, $3,399 for 16-inch

At Apple’s “Pro and Tell” event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Apple is expected to unveil its most groundbreaking product since last month. As with the unveiling of the iPhone Duo, Apple will likely offer its own entry in a product category that has existed for years: the touchscreen laptop. Specifically, we expect this to be an OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro.

But the price may also be groundbreaking, according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Gurman says a starting price of $2,899 for the 14-inch version has been “discussed” according to his anonymous sources. A 17-inch MacBook Pro in 2006 reached a comparable price point, $2,799. But that’s without accounting for inflation. It is also fascinating to note that your 2006 MacBook Pro came with a DVD burner. The past is a foreign country.

The $2,899 price tag for the new 14-inch version is a jump of $400 over the one currently available. A similar $400 jump for the current $2,999 16-inch version means a starting price of $3,399 for the 16-inch touchscreen model.
