Microsoft has announced the Xbox Nano Controller, its smallest Xbox controller to date, designed for gamers who want something more compact, lightweight and affordable. Whether you have smaller hands, are looking for a controller for younger gamers, or just want something to carry around, the Xbox Nano Controller looks like a really good alternative to the standard Xbox Wireless Controller.
At just over 5 inches (12.7cm) long and weighing about 3.5 ounces (99g), the Xbox Nano Controller is actually smaller and lighter than most modern smartphones. And it still manages to include all 18 standard gameplay inputs.
Despite its smaller dimensions, Microsoft has kept the familiar Xbox controller layout, so you don’t have to relearn where all the buttons are. The smaller design can take some getting used to, though, especially if you’re used to playing with a full-size controller.
The Xbox Nano controller isn’t just about shrinking the existing controller design. Microsoft has included a rechargeable battery, which means you don’t have to worry about constantly replacing AA batteries.
There is also a programmable action button that can be customized to perform frequently used actions, such as taking screenshots or recording gameplay clips.
Connectivity is handled via Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth, allowing the controller to work across a range of compatible devices. This makes it useful over traditional Xbox console gaming, especially for those who enjoy games on different devices than their smartphones.
This is great news for mobile gamers. Carrying a full-sized Xbox controller in your backpack isn’t exactly difficult, but having a controller that takes up even less space would certainly be more convenient.
Of course, the real question is how comfortable the Xbox Nano Controller will be during longer gaming sessions. A smaller controller can work brilliantly for casual gaming, but gamers with larger hands may still prefer the ergonomics of a traditional Xbox controller.
Microsoft is also positioning the Nano as an affordable option for families who want additional controllers for local multiplayer gaming. Games like Minecraft Dungeons II, which supports up to four players in co-op, could be a good fit.
Xbox Nano Controller pricing and Australian availability
The Xbox Nano Controller is priced at US$49.99, with pre-orders opening on October 14, 2026.
Microsoft has confirmed that Australia is among the countries that will receive the controller when it launches in November 2026, alongside the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Japan, and several other markets. Australian pricing wasn’t confirmed in the announcement, so we’ll have to wait for local pricing details from Microsoft or authorized retailers.
