A wireless controller may still need a cable on Xbox. That is the first difference to understand and 8BitDo Ultimate 3E vs Ultimate 3 mode: the 3E supports 2.4GHz Wireless on Xboxwhile the older 3-mode uses a wireless USB connection on that console. Both also serve Windows and mobile devices, but their shared Ultimate branding hides meaningful differences in controls, customization, loading, and platform limits.
Xbox Wireless is the main component line

The Ultimate 3E connects to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One via 2.4GHz wireless or wired USB. Its adapter can stay in the dock, with the dock connected to the console. On Windows it also supports wireless or wired operation. Bluetooth is the connection intended for compatible Apple and Android devices; it is not the xbox connection described on the product page.
Ultimate 3-mode separates its three connection methods by platform: Cable USB for Xbox2.4GHz or USB for Windows, and Bluetooth for mobile and Apple devices. Its included wireless receiver therefore does not make it a wireless Xbox controller. If the goal is to remove the cable across a living room, this platform table is more important than the word wireless in a dealer list.
Modular parts change the feel, not just the appearance

The 3E adds a removable magnetic faceplate and an accessory pack. You can change the ABXY module between silicone and microswitch versions, switch D-pads and fit different joystick caps. Its controls include TMR joystickstwo rear buttons, and additional L4/R4 bumpers. Hall-effect impulse triggers have two physical stop settings that provide instant adjustment between longer travel and a shorter trigger pull.
The 3-mode used Hall-effect joysticks and triggerstwo rear paddles, and updated bumpers and D-pad. It’s the simpler package if you want the established layout instead of interchangeable button modules. Sensor type alone does not determine which controller feels better or produces better aim. Shape, button preference, and the games you play remain separate considerations.
Size is another practical difference: the 3E is listed at 285 grams, compared to 250 grams for the 3-mode. That makes the new model more difficult on paper. Readers considering an entirely different form factor can also see our Xbox Nano controller coverage before treating extra controls as the sole design priority.
The PC extras don’t all follow you to Xbox

8BitDo specified up to 1,000Hz polling and six-axis motion control for the 3E on PC, explicitly excluding these features on Xbox consoles. The maximum survey figure is manufacturer lab data, not an independent measurement of end-to-end game latency. Neither a faster reporting interval nor a different joystick sensor guarantees that a game will respond the same on every platform.
Both support Ultimate Software X for configuration. The 3E page also identifies mobile Ultimate Software V2 compatibility and lists mapping, stick and trigger adjustments, vibrations and firmware updates. Match the software to the exact controller and platform. A profile feature on a Windows setup should not be adopted to remove the console limitations specified in the hardware specifications.
The battery and the included dock complete the choice

The 3E combines a 1,400 mAh battery with a claimed 18 hours of play and a four-to-five-hour charge time. Its included dock uses contact-free wireless charging, and the package includes a travel case and additional controls. The 3-mode features a 1,000mAh battery, 20 hours of play, and around four hours to charge, with its own dock included. These are published claims under unspecified matching conditions, not a controlled endurance comparison.
For Xbox users, choosing whether wireless console play and interchangeable controls solve a real need. For PC users already comfortable with the 3-mode layout, the case for the 3E is more on the modular feel, extra controls, and the explicitly supported PC features. More customization can be useful without being necessary for every game.
In the November 1, 2026 check, the official 8BitDo page linked US Amazon listings for both models, and its e-shop listed the 3E on $149.99. The buttons below correspond to the 3E Gray and 3-Mode Jade variants. Check the selected color, including accessories, stock and delivery conditions.
