Indie App Spotlight: ‘Flipcorder’ lets you shoot retro footage on your iPhone Duo

Welcome to Indie App Spotlight. This is a weekly 9to5Mac series where we showcase the latest apps in the indie app world. If you are a developer and would like your app to be featured, get in touch.

If you want more of a nostalgic video feel from your iPhone footage, Flipcorder is a great app to check out. It is optimized for iPhone Duo, although the app works on all other iPhone models as well.

Highlights

Similar to a real camcorder, the Flipcorder lets you record to tape. All the footage you capture throughout the day is saved to one tape, and it can hold up to 30 minutes of footage. You don’t take videos, in a traditional sense, because all your footage stays on one tape – recorded 20 seconds at a time.

It is meant to help you capture small moments in an unaltered sense. You just press the red record button and you’re set.

On iPhone Duo, you can take advantage of the larger internal display to get a preview of your footage, in addition to its nostalgic feeling UI.

You don’t have to shoot your footage in an old style though. While the app offers VHS and MiniDV style videos, you can also record high quality video while taking advantage of cassette style compiled video.

Download the app

Flipcorder is available as a one-time purchase of $4.99 in the App Store for iPhone models running iOS 26 and later. After that, it’s smooth sailing with no additional in-app purchases or ads.
