Nintendo 3DS gets surprise update from Nintendo years after shutdown

If you own a Nintendo console, it’s not really unusual for the company to announce system and maintenance updates for its systems, especially since it continues to provide software support for the Switch and Switch 2. That being said, it looks like Nintendo is still rolling out maintenance updates for its older handhelds, which in this case includes the Nintendo 3DS family of devices.

Despite shutting down online servers over two years ago, 3DS network services are scheduled to undergo maintenance for two hours today starting at 22:00 GMT / 11PM CET / 3PM PT, which may temporarily affect game reinstallations for users still playing on their 3DS systems. We can only assume that this includes all 3DS models, including the 3DS XL, 2DS, and even the “new” editions.

As noted by the folks over at Nintendo Everything , the planned maintenance rollout will also include the mobile Nintendo Store app on iOS and Android from 6pm to 11pm PT.

Switch users can also expect maintenance this week with user and save data transfer work on October 27 from 9PM to 11PM PT. Finally, Nintendo Switch Online Cloud Save Data Maintenance is scheduled for October 28 from 10:30 PM to 1:30 AM PT.

The Nintendo 3DS was launched back in February 2011, and despite a somewhat rocky start, the handheld proved to be a successful system in the long run, especially in terms of profits and developer support. Nintendo has continued to provide online maintenance support for the 3DS until 2024, where it will then shut down support for online play and services, although users will still be able to download their purchased games.
