ZEE5 introduces AI-powered clips to turn movies and shows into short vertical videos

Add MobiGyan as a preferred source on GoogleZEE5 joined in Google Cloud to introduce clipsan AI-powered vertical video experience designed to change how viewers discover movies and shows on the streaming platform. The feature automatically identifies engaging moments from ZEE5’s long-form content library and turns them into short, swipeable vertical videos.

Instead of functioning as a separate short video platform, Clips is one Content discovery layer for ZE5. Viewers can watch a short scene and move directly to the corresponding full-length movie or series if they want to continue watching. Early viewing behavior shows movement from clips to full-length content, according to the companies.

Like ZEE5 Clips uses AI

Clips was jointly developed by the ZEE5 and Google Cloud teams and combines various AI and machine learning technologies to process ZEE5’s existing catalog.

The system used Gemini Prothe Chirp multilingual model, Google Cloud Vision API and deep learning models for image processing. These technologies work together to analyze movies and shows, identify moments that can function as engaging standalone clips and convert the selected content into a vertical format.

The use of Chirp is particularly relevant to ZEE5’s multilingual catalog, allowing the system to handle speech recognition and linguistic analysis across multiple regional languages.

Image processing and vision systems then help prepare the selected footage for a vertical, mobile-friendly viewing format instead of manually editing each clip.

Clips turns long form content into swipeable videos

ZEE5 Clips is designed around a swipe-based discovery experience. Instead of scrolling through conventional static thumbnails and trailers, viewers can quickly sample current moments from movies and shows.

If a particular clip catches their attention, they can go straight to the full-length title of the playback experience.

This gives ZEE5 another way to build older or less immediately visible content from its catalog, while viewers decide what they want to watch based on actual scenes rather than just a title, poster or a conventional trailer.

13,000 clips generated from 1,200 titles

ZEE5 says the technology has already been used to generate 13,000 clips from 1,200 titles.

The scale is significant because the system can create multiple discovery points from existing long-form content without requiring each piece of footage to go through a traditional manual editing workflow. ZEE5 says that the early viewing behavior proves that clips can act as an entry point into the deeper consumption of full-length content.

AI-powered content discovery for ZEE5

With clips, ZEE5 moves beyond traditional content discovery methods such as static carousels and trailers. The platform uses AI to analyze its existing library and automatically surface moments that can attract viewers.

The approach also allows the same long-form catalog to generate new discovery experiences at scale, helping potential viewers find titles they may not have actively sought out.

Tejkarran Singh Bajaj, Business Head – ZEE5 India and AI & Innovation, said the feature puts compelling moments from ZEE5’s long-form catalog into the swipe journey, while allowing the platform to create new entry points into thousands of hours of existing content through AI. Pramod Prakash, Chief Technology Officer at Zee Entertainment Enterprises, said the feature was built around making it easier for viewers to discover stories they might not have been actively looking for. He added that ZEE5 has generated 13,000 clips from 1,200 titles so far using Gemini AI, Speech-to-Text, and Cloud Vision API.

Generally, ZEE5 positions clips as a bridge between Short form discovery and long form streaminguse AI to make existing movies and shows more accessible entry points for viewers.

Tejkarran Singh Bajaj, Business Head – Zee 5 India and AI & Innovation, said: “At Zee 5, we look at content consumption differently, and Clips is a direct reflection of this. Thousands of hours of existing content and fresh entry points, at scale, with help of AI.

Pramod Prakash, Chief Technology Officer, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., said: “Clips was built around a simple audience need: making it easier for viewers to discover stories they might not be actively looking for. Speech-to-text and Cloud Vision API to process content at scale.
